At Swanbourne House, we are proud of our strong academic tradition and the breadth of opportunity we offer every pupil. However, we also recognise that the world our children are preparing for is changing at an unprecedented pace. The expectations of parents, senior schools and future employers continue to evolve. While academic excellence remains central, there is now greater importance placed on communication, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and leadership, alongside strong subject knowledge.

Success is no longer defined solely by what pupils know, but by how effectively they can apply that knowledge – how they question, explore and adapt.

It is this belief that underpins The Swanbourne Journey – our approach to developing young people from age 3 to 13.

Our ambition is simple: that every pupil leaves Swanbourne House fully prepared for senior school and ready to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

The Swanbourne House Journey - Academics - Prep School - Buckinghamshire

The Swanbourne Journey provides a coherent pathway from Pre-reception to Year 8, combining strong academic foundations with opportunities for personal growth, leadership and intellectual challenge.

FOUNDATIONS FOR SUCCESS (age 3 to 8)

Through a broad and engaging curriculum, pupils develop secure foundations in literacy, numeracy and learning behaviours. Underpinned by our Swanbots skills programme, they build the confidence, curiosity and independence required for future success.

THE SWANBOURNE PATHWAY (age 9 to 13)

The Swanbourne Pathway combines three key elements that work together to prepare pupils for senior school and beyond.

THE SWANBOURNE CERTIFICATE

The Certificate captures the last two years of the Swanbourne Pathway (Years 7 & 8, ages 11 to 13), celebrating achievement across the academic and wider curriculum while recognising growth, contribution and personal development.

SIGNATURE SKILLS

The Swanbourne Signature Skills provide a common language through which pupils can understand, reflect upon and articulate their growth. They are not taught as standalone lessons but are woven throughout the curriculum and wider life of the school, providing opportunities for pupils to develop and demonstrate them in meaningful contexts.

These are the essential human skills that enable pupils to thrive in an increasingly digital and AI-driven society.

The ability to communicate ideas clearly, confidently and purposefully.

At Swanbourne, pupils develop Oracy through presentations, debates, discussions, viva-style assessments and public speaking opportunities. Whether explaining a scientific investigation, defending an argument in History or presenting findings from the Independent Enquiry Project, pupils learn to communicate with confidence.

Asking thoughtful questions and seeking deeper understanding.

Pupils develop Enquiry through research, investigation and exploration. From evaluating historical sources and conducting scientific investigations to undertaking independent projects, pupils learn to question, analyse

and think critically.

Working effectively with others to achieve a shared goal.

Through team projects, practical investigations, performances and sporting activities, pupils learn to listen, contribute, adapt and support others whilst working towards a common purpose.

Generating ideas, solving problems and thinking innovatively.

Creativity is developed across the curriculum. Whether designing a prototype in DT, creating a solution as part of the Innovate Project, composing music or approaching a problem from a different perspective, pupils are encouraged to think imaginatively and take intellectual risks.

Taking responsibility, showing initiative and positively influencing others.

Pupils develop Leadership through positions of responsibility, mentoring opportunities, collaborative projects and wider school involvement. They learn to lead by example, make considered decisions and contribute positively to their community.

Demonstrating perseverance, commitment and a willingness to embrace challenge.

Endeavour underpins everything we do. Pupils are encouraged to respond positively to feedback, tackle difficult tasks with determination and recognise that growth often comes through challenge and persistence.

SIGNATURE EXPERIENCES

A Swanbourne education goes far beyond the classroom. Through a range of Signature Experiences, pupils apply their learning to creative and real-world contexts, harnessing curiosity and independence along the way.

Our expansive grounds provide space to explore, create and discover, while our location – close to Milton Keynes and the Oxford–Cambridge technology arc – connects pupils to one of the UK’s most dynamic centres of innovation.

As part of The Stowe Group, pupils also benefit from access to Stowe’s outstanding teaching and learning facilities.

Year 7 Innovate Project

This project challenges pupils to think differently… and think bigger.

Through research, planning, design, prototyping and presentation, they experience the interconnected nature of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects whilst developing creativity, resilience and problem-solving skills.

Year 8 Independent Enquiry Project

The Independent Enquiry Project provides pupils with the opportunity to pursue a subject of personal interest in depth and take ownership of their learning.

Through sustained research and investigation, pupils learn to formulate questions, evaluate evidence, think critically and communicate their findings with confidence. They develop the habits of scholarship, intellectual curiosity and independent thinking that will support success at senior school and beyond.

As part of the project, pupils are taught to engage critically with emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, learning to question sources, identify bias and develop informed, independent viewpoints.

Year 7 & 8 Potential Scholars Group

Potential Scholars Groups in Years 7 and 8 provide opportunities for pupils to pursue their interests and

talents beyond the curriculum, preparing them specifically for the scholarship processes at senior schools.

Through specialist mentoring, enrichment and challenge across Academics, Sport, Music,

Drama, Art and Design Technology, pupils delve deeper into their interests, developing

curiosity and a drive for excellence.

Horizons

Horizons brings learning to life beyond the classroom.

Through residential trips, outdoor learning, visiting speakers, cultural experiences and moments of reflection, pupils are encouraged to develop a sense of awe and wonder about the world around them. Experiences might range from hearing first-hand accounts from an Arctic explorer, to taking part in a STEM roadshow, or experiencing the adventure and teamwork of the Combined Cadet Force.

Leadership and Responsibility

Through positions of responsibility, mentoring and wider school involvement, pupils are encouraged to demonstrate initiative, support others and make a positive contribution to the school community and local area. These experiences help pupils develop the confidence, character and leadership qualities that will serve them throughout their lives.
